Ginari Gibb Price has been a practicing physician and psychiatrist for ten years. She currently practices at Psycare LLC, a private practice in Atlanta, Georgia, where she treats a wide range of disorders, including substance dependence, developmental disorders, and anxiety disorders.
"Anxiety disorders" is an umbrella term that covers a group of mental conditions, she says. These conditions can cause people to feel frightened, distressed, or uneasy in situations that most people would take in their stride. She says that it is important to remember that anxiety is a normal reaction to stressful situations, and experiencing it does not necessarily indicate a problem. In fact is can useful in certain situations. But when anxiety becomes excessive then it can be a serious problem.
Among the more common anxiety disorders, says Ginari Gibb Price, are Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD; Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD; Panic Disorder; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD; and Social Phobia, also known as social anxiety disorder.
The exact causes of these orders can vary from patient to patient. As Ginari Gibb Price knows, researchers are studying the role of genes in the development of some of these disorders, and also the role of environmental factors such as physical and psychological stress, and even diet. A prevailing view is that certain mental disorders are the result of a combination of these factors, not unlike heart disease and Type 1 diabetes. While there are studies clearly suggesting a genetic role, there are other, obvious cases that are environmental in origin, such as PTSD, that are brought on by trauma.
Ginari Gibb Price has been fascinated by these cases and has made anxiety disorders a central part of her practice.
